Willingness to Communicate and Second Language Speech Fluency: An Idiodynamic Investigation of Attractor States

Willingness to communicate (WTC) has recently been researched as a dynamic variable, with some investigations viewing it complex system (CDS). One important property associated CDS is the notion of attractor states, which are characterized by stable patterns behavior. The present study employed an idiodynamic method monitor per-second WTC changes 20 participants during three-minute speaking tasks. Using graphs illustrating dynamics, stability were identified unit analysis for attractors. Temporal measures utterances that coincided attractors also examined. Results demonstrated likely emerge in both and L2 fluency, largely depended on two categories content-related linguistic-cognitive factors. Data indicates fluency exhibited parallel dynamics most cases. study’s findings yield pedagogical implications discussed at end.
